gray file path went missing from Open Resource.

Leo Ufimtsev
Hello guys,

I noticed the gray text went missing from the open resource dialogue a while ago:
Inline image 1

My old Eclipse had this text:
Inline image 2

Considering in SWT every widget is present ~3 times in sources,
not having the file path in the dialogue makes it rather tedious to navigate   :-/.

Was this an intentional UI change?
If so, can we go back to former behavior or is there a way to re-enable it? (I haven't seen an option).

Well, either that or who knows, instead of fixing a Gtk bug I might accidentally fix a Cocoa bug instead because I opened the wrong java file :-/.  #FridaySarcasm.

Thank you.

Re: gray file path went missing from Open Resource.

Leo Ufimtsev
As a note, Open Type shows the path if there are multiple entries for the same item.

imho Open Resource should do the same and show the path if there are duplicate entries.

Re: gray file path went missing from Open Resource.

Lars Vogel-2
IMHO we should always show the path. IMHO it is a "feature bug" in open type that they only show them for duplicate entries. Drive me crazy every time I need the path.

I'm not aware of any intentional change to not show the path in open resource. Please open a bug for that.

Hello

Last working one:
Version: Photon (4.8)
Build id: I20171217-2000
(As a note, this version showed path for duplicate entries, not all entries).

My current build where I have the issue:
Version: Photon (4.8)
Build id: I20180213-2000

So something in between Dec17 and Feb13 caused the regression.

imho +1 to Lar's suggestion, it would be good to have full path for all entries, because that way you can quickly tell what project they're in at a glance.

Because I'm spelunking, looking for a file within a project that I can't remember the exact name.  If I have a bunch of matching files which are unique, I have to scroll through them one by one to look at the status area.  Inefficient.

I'm with Lars.  I've never liked the current behaviour.

I think it would bring some consistency in behavior too (by consistent, I mean that the behavior is not conditional), and consistent behavior is often perceived as a simplification by users

I'd find it simpler to have the full path as a decoration on the item (as it is in case multiple files have same name) than to have such status line. The eye-distance is small and it makes the scope of the patch really clear that it is the scope of the item.

For those reasons, I believe that getting rid of the status line and showing the path on all items would actually be a good UX simplification and improvement.

Also the status line can be hidden since a while, so we cannot assume that the user can use it.

I transfer the "Always show the path" into a bug, so that we can continue our discussion via a bug.

I think it would bring some consistency in behavior too (by consistent, I mean that the behavior is not conditional), and consistent behavior is often perceived as a simplification by users

> You see this info in the status line if that's really giving you any additional value.

If we fix it for open resource we should also adjust open type

It looks fixed to me. In Open Resource the fix was to display path for duplicated and in your screenshot paths is shown for the duplicate "Comment".
Or do you have smth else in mind ?

@Wim, during my testing, only "Open Resource" was affected. "Open Type" was not broken to begin with, so there is nothing to fix.
I.e, the path was always shown, but only for duplicates.

I think the confusion is that there is disagreement on whether the path should be
shown always or only for duplicates (but this is a separate matter).
However, to date, the functionality is that the path is shown only for duplicate items (as seen for 'Comment') in your screenshot
and not for all items.

I see. I misunderstood. I was reading from the discussion to always show the path. Probably wishful thinking.
